Federer Wins Record 15th Grand Slam

Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon Finals yesterday to pick up his record 15th Grand Slam title. Federer passed Pete Sampras’ mark of 14 titles and now stands alone in tennis history with the most career Grand Slams. Yesterday match went a record 30 games in the final set. Roddick fought hard and came within one point of knocking out the No. 1 seed. Federer will once again reclaim the World No. 1 spot following his win.

A lot of debate will start now: who is the best tennis player of all-time, Pete Sampras or Roger Federer? Sampras won 14 Grand Slams and 64 singles titles, though he was never able to win the French Open. Federer has won 15 Grand Slams (including the French) and 60 singles titles. The one thing that holds Federer back is that he has struggled again Rafael Nadal his entire career. The two have met in 7 Grand Slam finals, with Nadal leading 5-2. How can you say someone is the best of all time when they can’t beat their biggest rival? Sampras on the other hand had a winning record against his biggest rival, Andre Agassi.

At this point, I would give the edge to Federer. In addition to his 60 singles titles, he also has 8 doubles titles (compared to Pete’s 2). Federer is only 27 years old and realistically could win 2-5 more Grand Slams before it’s all said and done. He’ll pretty much own every men’s record there is.

What’s your opinion? Who do you think is the better?
