Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon Finals yesterday to pick up his record 15th Grand Slam title. Federer passed Pete Sampras’ mark of 14 titles and now stands alone in tennis history with the most career Grand Slams. Yesterday match went a record 30 games in the final set. Roddick fought hard and came within one point of knocking out the No. 1 seed. Federer will once again reclaim the World No. 1 spot following his win.

A lot of debate will start now: who is the best tennis player of all-time, Pete Sampras or Roger Federer? Sampras won 14 Grand Slams and 64 singles titles, though he was never able to win the French Open. Federer has won 15 Grand Slams (including the French) and 60 singles titles. The one thing that holds Federer back is that he has struggled again Rafael Nadal his entire career. The two have met in 7 Grand Slam finals, with Nadal leading 5-2. How can you say someone is the best of all time when they can’t beat their biggest rival? Sampras on the other hand had a winning record against his biggest rival, Andre Agassi.

At this point, I would give the edge to Federer. In addition to his 60 singles titles, he also has 8 doubles titles (compared to Pete’s 2). Federer is only 27 years old and realistically could win 2-5 more Grand Slams before it’s all said and done. He’ll pretty much own every men’s record there is.

What’s your opinion? Who do you think is the better?

July 4th is a time we celebrate our nation’s independence. It’s a time for family gatherings, outdoor activities and BBQs. With the 4th landing on a Saturday this year, we are also blessed with plenty of sporting events to attend of watch on TV. Let’s take a look at what’s going on.

Baseball fans are in luck… every team is in action on July 4th. A couple of matchups I’m looking forward to are: Mets vs. Phillies, Yankees vs. Blue Jays and Mariners vs. Red Sox. It’s great that there are a ton of games tomorrow, but most of them are afternoon games so you probably won’t be seeing any fireworks after the game.

NASCAR is also in action this weekend. The Coke Zero 400 starts at 7:30 p.m. on July 4th in Daytona. If you’re a racing fan this is must see TV.

Golf is huge on the 4th of July, in fact I’ll be playing tomorrow in a breakfast tournament. It’s great to play a round in the morning then have all afternoon for BBQ and the night open for fireworks. If you can’t hit the links yourself, tune into CBS for the AT&T National. As of right now, Tiger Woods is tied for the lead.

Then there’s always the classic 4th of July backyard games:
-Wiffle Ball
-Horseshoes
-Marco polo (if you have a pool)
-Bocce ball

Are you going to any games this weekend? Will you be watching sports on TV? Post a comment and let us know.

Not since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941 has any Major League Baseball player hit .400 or above. There have been several players to get close, but hitting over .400 for an entire season is a remarkable feat. A batter would need to get on an incredible hot streak and continue it for months. Today, I tried to “Stump Zeke” with the question: Since Ted Williams hit over .400 in 1941, who has come the closest?” Check the video below for his response.

So I’m watching the ESPN bottom line this morning as I’m getting ready for work and saw a mention of Albert Pujols jacking his 29th and 30th homerun of the season last night. That’s 30 homeruns and we haven’t even hit the midway point of the season. He’s on pace for about 62 homeruns, which would be an incredible feat since the steroid eruption a few years ago. No one has hit over 60 homeruns since Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa did it in 2001.

Because Pujols is still so young (he’s only 29) and still in the prime of his career it’s hard to comprehend just how good he is. I challenge anyone to give me a player in history who has been a better hitter than Pujols through the first 9 seasons of their career. Pujols has gone 100 runs – 30 homeruns – 100 rbi or better in 7 of his first 8 full seasons, and the only season he didn’t reach that feat… he had 99 runs.

Through 78 games of his 9th season, Pujols has 349 total homeruns. Assuming he ends the 2009 season with 370 homeruns, he will have a legitimate shot at breaking Barry Bonds all-time homerun record before the age of 40! I never would have thought that was possible. Pujols has a career .334 batting average and is so consistent at the plate. He draws a lot of walks and strikes out at a much lower rate then other homerun hitters.

Alex Rodriguez generally gets crowned as the greatest baseball player today… but now that his name is tainted with steroids shouldn’t that honor go to Pujols? What’s your take on Albert Pujols? Do you think we’re witnessing one of the best players the game has ever seen?
