The BCS Standings Are Out
The official BCS Standings for college football were released yesterday for the first time in 2009. The BCS Standings are determined by polls and computer-generated rankings that evaluate strength of schedule, record vs. common opponents and other factors. Every year there always seems to be controversy surrounding the top two BCS teams and who will go on to play in the championship game. Let’s take a look at the first week standings.

There is not much that can be said for the top three teams. Florida, the defending BCS Champion, deserves the top spot with a 6-0 record. Sure they almost lost to Arkansas (who Alabama blew out), but until the Gators lose they will stay No. 1. Boise State is the highest ranked team from a non-BCS Conference. They will have to be undefeated if they want a shot at the BCS Championship Game, and even with no losses on their schedule it still might not be enough for them to jump a 1-loss Florida, Bama, Texas or USC. The problem with Boise State is they play in a small conference and will have only played one ranked team all year.
There is still a lot of football to be played. Cincinnati, TCU, Iowa, and Miami are all in the Top 10. I can’t image any experts predicting this before the season started. Several of the teams currently in the Top 25 will play each other before the Bowl games are selected, so we’ll surely see a BCS Standings shake-up as the season rolls on. Alabama still has to play LSU and potentially Florida in a SEC Championship game. That’s a tough road for the Crimson Tide. USC, ranked No. 7, will play No. 11 Oregon in two weeks.
What do you think of the current BCS Standings? Do you agree with the Top 25? Or is it missing someone?
