Three Way Race for NFL MVP

We’re already into week 12 of the NFL season and in my opinion the MVP race is down to three players: Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Drew Brees. I can’t believe that at the age of 40 Brett Favre is still in the conversation for MVP, but really he’s having one of the best seasons of his career and he has the Vikings at 9-1. But despite all that, I think Brees and Manning are ahead of him.

At this point, the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts are 10-0. Familiar territory for the Colts, but completely unfamiliar territory for the Saints. What Brees has been able to do for that team is amazing. He’s brought them from the “Aints” back to the “Saints.” Brees has tremendous stats – 2,746 yards, 22 touchdowns and 9 interceptions – and he has led his team to several come from behind victories. Without Brees, the Saints would be nowhere near 10-0.

Even with all of that, Drew Brees still isn’t No. 1 on my list for potential MVPs. It has to go to Peyton Manning. He has his team at 10-0 and leds the NFL in passing yards, completion percentage and has a 102.7 QB rating. Manning has thrown for 3,171 yards, 21 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions. Manning is the heart and soul of the Indianapolis Colts. I honestly think with their horrible run game, that they wouldn’t have 3-4 wins without Manning. Year after year he goes out there and plays like an MVP. It’s time for him to add another award to the mantle.

All those teams would be .500 without their star QB. Well, now Peyton’s got 24/11/3415, Brees is 22/9/2746 going into tonight, and Favre is 24/2/3874. Favre is the front runner with the numbers. Chris Johnson has to be considered as well. Might be the first RB since Jim Brown to average over 6 yards/carry.
