Conference Expansions

There has been some talk the past few days about the Big Ten exploring expansion in the next 12-18 months. My guess is they would look to add one team so they’ll finally reach 12 teams. Then they can split the conference to two divisions and have a conference championship game. It will add an extra game to their schedule and make the conference more appealing. The PAC-10 is another conference that should look at expansion.

Football Fanatics asked on Facebook what teams should be added if these two conferences expand. Let’s take a look at some of the top choices:

Big Ten: Notre Dame, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh
PAC-10: Boise State, BYU and Utah

The Big Ten only needs to add one team to reach 12 – I think Notre Dame would be their favorite choice. Notre Dame is currently independent so it wouldn’t mess up any other conferences. They also have the largest following, a television contract and are located right there in Big Ten country.

The PAC-10 on the other hand needs to add two teams – it’s harder for them to choose. On one hand they could capture the entire Utah market by adding Utah and BYU, plus create an instant conference rivalry game. On the other hand, they could add Boise State and Utah thus capturing markets in both Boise and Salt Lake City. No matter what the PAC-10 does, it would likely take teams from the WAC or MWC thus forcing them to go out and find new schools to fill their holes.

What teams would you like to see in the Big Ten and PAC-10 should the both expand to 12 teams and finally have conference championship games?
