Villanova vs. Montana FCS Championship Game

18 December 2009 Posted by David 3,343 views 2 Comments

Did you know the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Championship game is tonight in Chattanooga, TN ? This year we have the 13-1 Villanova Wildcats fighting for their first ever championship against the 14-0 Montana Grizzlies. The Grizzlies are definitely the favorites tonight. They’ve won 12 straight Big Sky Conference titles and are making their fifth appearance in the national championship game this decade.

I’ll be honest – I’m looking at Montana’s roster and stats for the first time ever right now… all I can say is wow! They are impressive. The Grizzlies quarterback Selle has thrown for almost 2,700 yards, 25 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. Their running back Reynolds has rushed 306 times for 1439 yards and 22 touchdowns (those are Mark Ingram type numbers). And Montana also has a receiver with 72 receptions, 1317 yards and 12 touchdowns. They seem like an offensive juggernaut. I would not want to face them in a championship game.

Immediately following the game tonight, Football Fanatics will have championship gear for the winning team: Montana Grizzlies or Villanova Wildcats. We will have champs T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and more. The game airs on ESPN 2 tonight at 8:00 ET.

I’m predicting a Montana Grizzlies blowout, 42-21. What do you think?

EDIT: Villanova won! Shop official Villanova FCS Champs gear at Football Fanatics.

The stats are nice as is your confidence. However, as much as I’d like your guess to be true, the game will likely be much closer than that. V’s D has dominated a conference in which the emphasis is on the run (a lot like the SEC conference of old). While that should support your guess, the problem is that this year Montana has emphasized the running game with decent success. If Montana pushes the run in this game, it’ll be playing right into V’s strength. V also runs a 3-3-5 defense (like a nickel package with considerably more blitzing) which the Griz haven’t seen this year. For the passing game to work, Selle, the griz quarterback, will have to have an incredible quick learning curve. If the griz can concentrate on the pass and figure out the defense, it’ll be a blow out. If not, it’ll be a low scoring game and V will have a slight advantage. The bookmakers are betting that the griz run or don’t figure out the defense. V is favored by 2 points. that said, bet on the griz. this team is on a roll and it’ll take V everything it’s got to win.

What are your thoughts now? Montana was a very solid team, but plays in a weak conference. They would win 7-9 games/year in the CAA and VU would have beat them 8 out of 10 times this season.
