USC’s Pete Carroll Takes Seahawks Job

On Friday, the rumors were flying that USC’s Pete Carroll would be accepting the Seattle Seahawks head coach position. I didn’t want to write about it on Friday because there was nothing concrete, but over the weekend we got the confirmation we were looking for. Carroll officially resigned from Southern Cal and is expected to be introduced by the Seahawks tomorrow. I read that the deal is worth something around $6.5 million per year.

The Seahawks fired Jim Mora Jr. after only one season of coaching. They had named him head coach in waiting during the Holmgren years, so I’m not sure what happened that would cause Seahawks management to fire him so quickly. Sure they went 5-11 this season, but first year coaches rarely succeed. You have to give them time. Oh well,  time to move on.

Pete Carroll had what many thought was a dream job at USC. He got to live in sunny Los Angeles and the Trojans were the biggest team in town. Some people speculate that Carroll wanted out of USC because they might get hit with big-time sanctions by the NCAA for rules violations. Additional information will probably come out at a later date.

I like the hire by the Seahawks. Carroll has NFL head coaching experience and in fact led the Patriots to the playoffs in two of the three years he coached in New England. It will be interesting to see if Pete goes in there and cleans house. Will he want a 34-year old Matt Hasselbeck as his quarterback, or will he want to use their No. 6 pick on a rookie QB?

What’s your opinion on the coaching hire? Do you think Pete Carroll will win in Seattle?
