The Origins of Father’s Day

You could say that the mother of Father’s Day was Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. Sonora was the daughter of William Smart, a sergeant in the Union Army during the Civil War. When she was 16, Sonora’s mother passed and she was left, with her father, the task of raising her five younger siblings. Sonora held her father in great regard and was emotionally moved while hearing a church sermon about the newly recognized Mother’s Day. Sonora acted swiftly to get a day of honoring for men recognized and thus the first Father’s day was founded in 1910 in Spokane, Washington. It wasn’t until 1972, that President Richard Nixon signed into law a permanent U.S. Father’s Day to be observed on the third Sunday of June. Every year, on the final Monday in May, we Americans take time to honor those who have fallen while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The box score for the April 15, 1947 matchup between the Boston Braves and the Brooklyn Dodgers reads like almost any other. It was opening day for Major League Baseball, and 26,623 people were in attendance at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field to watch the Dodgers defeat the visiting Braves 5-3. Nothing too much out of the ordinary took place in the game except for the name on Brooklyn’s lineup for first baseman: Jackie Robinson. Up until 1947, baseball had always been a segregated game. Yet, on that day in April, Jackie Robinson broke the “color line” and made his Major League Basbeall debut. On April 15, we celebrate this occasion with every baseball fan and Jackie Robinson Day. Jackie Robinson was an exceptional baseball player. In fact, he attained Rookie of the Year honors in 1947 as the best first-year player in all of Major League Baseball. He won a World Series Championship with the Dodgers in 1955, a year before his last major league appearance.
