The hot topic around the watercooler yesterday was the Sunday finish to the 2009 British Open Championship at Turnberry. Tom Watson, age 59, was 8 feet away from adding another notch in his major championship belt. Watson missed the putt and wound up bogeying No. 18 to force a playoff with Stewart Cink. Viewers could tell Watson was emotionally and physically spent. He was no match for Cink in the 4-hole playoff.

It is hard to believe that the NFL season is already upon us. Training camps start this week. The Buffalo Bills, with the addition of Terrell Owens, are the first team to report – July 25, 2009. Of all the training camps, the Bills will be the one to watch. Terrell Owens and his antics always attract a large crowd. The city of Buffalo has been waiting for a media frenzy. They’ve been irrelevant on the field since the late ’90s.

I’m an avid listener of the Jime Rome Show on the radio, though I wouldn’t call myself a clone. One of the clever things that emailers write in are the haikus. No matter what the sports topic of the day, people submit a funny haiku in hopes that Rome will read it on air. I’m no poet, but here’s my go at a few sports haikus relating to today’s news.

Back in March, we posted a list of funny sports quotes. Since yesterday was the slowest sports day of the year (no baseball, no basketball, no football, no golf, etc), there really isn’t much to talk about. Created to honor Ken Block for his many acheivements, DC recently launched Block’s first-ever TeamWorks Collection in collaboration with the filming of his Gymkhana Two Project. The series follows the initial project which started off as a gymkhana practice video.

The National League came up just one run short again last night in the 2009 MLB All-Star game. This marks the 13th game in a row they have not been able to win. The NL had a chance to take the league in the bottom of the 7th inning when Colorado Rockie Brad Hawpe launched a shot to deep left center. The ball should have left the yard but Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Carl Crawford was there to rob the homerun with a leaping grab at the wall. This catch earned Crawford the 2009 MLB All-Star Game MVP Award.

The American League is on big streak when it comes to winning MLB All-Star Games. There is a lot riding on the 2009 MLB All-Star Game tonight at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The winning league gets home field advantage in the World Series. Today’s “Stump Zeke” trivia question is inspired by the game tonight and comes from Andrew, a Football Fanatics employee. Andrew wants to know: How many years in a row has the American League won the All-Star Game? Check the video to see if Zeke knows.

UFC 100 was held this past weekend. It was being hailed as the biggest event in UFC history. Reigning heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was defending his belt against a tough opponent in Frank Mir. These two guys don’t like each other and it was quite apparent following the fight. Lesnar beat Mir down in round 2 then taunted him, the fans, and the UFC following the fight. UFC President was not happy with Lesnar’s post-game act.

The 2009 MLB All-Star Rosters were announced the other day. For the most part there weren’t any snubs. One thing I love about the MLB All-Star voting is that the mangers of each team will select five players from their league who were not initially selected… then put them up for the “Final Vote.” Fans rally around a player and send them to the All-Star Game. This year, four of the AL Final Vote nominees are on my fantasy team: Chone Figgins, Adam Lind, Carlos Pena and Brandon Inge.

Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon Finals yesterday to pick up his record 15th Grand Slam title. Federer passed Pete Sampras’ mark of 14 titles and now stands alone in tennis history with the most career Grand Slams. Yesterday match went a record 30 games in the final set. Roddick fought hard and came within one point of knocking out the No. 1 seed. Federer will once again reclaim the World No. 1 spot following his win.
