The NHL Season just wrapped up a week ago with the Pittsburgh Penguins bringing home their their Stanley Cup. It got me thinking about some of the best hockey players of all-time… Wayne Gretsky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, etc. Not being a huge hockey fan, I caught myself browsing the internet trying to find out as much as I could about them. One interesting record I came across was perfect for an edition of “Stump Zeke.” Who holds the NHL record for most regular season NHL games played? Watch and find out.

Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Champs

Congratulations Penguins! The Pittsburgh Penguins just beat the Detroit Red Wings to capture their first Stanley Cup since the early 1990s. The Red Wings put up a good fight, forcing the series to go 7-games but ultimately it was the road team that prevailed. It’s been a loooong time since a road team won a championship on a Game 7.

Detroit Red Wings Conference Champs

The Detroit Red Wings won the 2009 NHL Western Conference last night in a 4-1 series win over the Chicago Blackhawks. The Red Wings are the currently Stanley Cup holders and are eyeing a chance to repeat. They will have a tough matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but I think Detroit is up to the challenge. Pittsburgh Penguins Conference Champs Gear

The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes last night 4-1 to advance to the 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Finals. The Penguins swept the series and have now won the Eastern Conference four times since 1990. Carolina had no answers for the intensity and skill of the Penguins. “We forced them to play our way,” Pittsburgh defensemen Brooks Orpik said. “We played Philadelphia, Washington and Carolina (in the playoffs) and to me it was three different styles of teams, but we didn’t do much adjusting I don’t think. We made those teams play the way we wanted to play.”

The NHL is probably thrilled to have Pittsburgh in the Finals. They have the NHL’s biggest star in Sidney Crosby and some of the best fans in all of hockey. NHL Winter Classic Gear

Living in Florida, we don’t get much exposure to hockey unless it’s a big game or the Stanley Cup Finals. One of those ‘big games’ is only two days away: The 2009 NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. The NHL Winter Classic is a series of NHL regular-season, outdoor hockey games played on New Year’s Day. This is the second consecutive NHL season with a Winter Classic game.

The 2009 Winter Classic features a matchup with the Detroit Red Wings vs. the Chicago Blackhawks. These two teams are bitter division rivals, with Detroit leading the Central Division and Chicago only a few points below them.

The weather forecast for the outdoor game in Chicago is a high of 37 degrees with few snow showers. Last year the game was played in a near blizzard in Buffalo. The perfect weather for outdoor hockey.

Avery’s Insults Scores Him A Suspension

Apparently Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery hasn’t heard the phase “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Avery was suspended indefinitely by the NHL on Tuesday, after an interview stating – “…a common thing in the NHL is for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s all about, but enjoy the game.”

It was assumed that Avery was referring to his ex Elisha Cuthbert, who is currently dating Calgary defensemen Dion Phaneuf. However Cuthbert was rumored to be with Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens prior to becoming official with Phaneuf. Either way, I don’t think he will be receiving a joyous Holiday card from Cuthbert this season.

Avery also dated Rachel Hunter, the former Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and actress who is now the girlfriend of Los Angeles Kings center Jarrett Stoll.

Avery’s hearing is scheduled for noon today in New York with the NHL Commissioner. Check back later for more details.
